There are two main password types in MS Access. User passwords, and actual database passwords. User passwords are always asked along with the user name when the program is launched. The db password is asked for when you open your password protected database.

MS Access provides both share level security and user level security. In a share level security databases are assigned passwords and anyone who knows the password can access the db. This security level was introduced in Access 95. There is no share level security in previous Access versions. Access also provides user level security. In a user level security users are authenticated when they start Access by logging on with their password. Both user name and passwords are required. Different users can have different permissions on objects. Permissions can be granted to just a single user or to users group. Group information and users passwords are stored in special system database. One system database could be shared between multiple databases and applications.

System database access is necessary to recover users passwords groups membership information. If the system database is lost or broken you will not be able to recover users passwords. System database's typically have .mdw or .mda file extensions. Please Note that not all .mda files are system databases

Access database can be achieved with do it yourself software, or like Excel password recovery you can send a company your file and pay them to decrypt it for you. If you are not an expert computer user, or you are in a rush for access to the database then you should consider the later, as it is a sure fire method of getting at your data. Most companies have a flat rate for recovery and offer a money back guarantee. Again as with Excel recovery be sure to pick up the phone and ask some questions prior to sending payment and the file, or access to the file. Find out the details of the guarantee, what they charge and how long they estimate it will be and any other questions that you may have.
