When your whole system has failed, you can't boot up and you are getting the can't find a hard drive type message. As this time you know that your system needs to be recovered!

Here is where you need to start:

  • Determine what is causing the failure

    • Is it software? Boot sector files corrupted?

    • Is it hardware? Failed hard drive? - Bad SCSI controller? - Bad disk cable?

Once you know what it is then you can do something about it.

Learn if data recovery software is the answer.

If you think that the problem may be the result of a boot sector virus, read through our partition recovery page, as we offer information on software that can be used.

If you think it is software problem and the hard drive is still working, then the quickest and easiest way to deal with the problem is to physically remove the drive. You can detect if the hard drive is the problem by putting your ear up to it and then powering up the system. If the drive is working, you should hear some sounds coming from it. When you have removed the hard drive, connect it in a machine that is working as a slave drive.  You can then copy the data you need to recover and proceed with a complete reinstall/format/zero fill and copy these files back when complete.

If you have a bad partition table or the like when you install the drive into the other machine and boot up, the drive most likely won't even show up. In that case turn to our partition recovery page for details on how to proceed.

If the hard drive or other media has completely failed, do not turn the machine on again. Stop all attempts at recovering your data. Contact the professionals and speak to them about shipping your drive to them for in-house recovery. Think first about how important the data is and how critical it is that you recover it. Costs for recovery in a clean room setting will range from as little as 1000.00 to as much as 5,000.00 or more, depending on how much data you need recovered, what the operating system was, what the data format is, and several other factors.
