A partition is a sub-division of the capacity of your hard drive, similar to the way a filing cabinet has different drawers (partitions) within it. How you organize the data in those different areas is up to you. Having your drive split into at least 2 partitions is critical in the event of an operating system failure. Why is this the case? Because all your data files will be on the other partition than your operating system. You do this so that you can reformat the OS partition (C:) in the event of a crash and all your data on d:, or whatever you call the partition, will be safe and sound after you do an OS reinstall. Partitioning also offers you a better way to keep your data organized.

Sometimes your partition may appear to have vanished. This can be devastating, especially if the failed partition contained critical data. So what can you do in the event of a partition failure? There are many software programs that are designed to recover these failed partitions, but it can be a tricky task to get it back. First off, what OS are you running? Learn more about Windows recovery and Linux recovery. Different OSs require different solutions. Is the partition NTFS or is it FAT32/16?
