Windows
based operating systems present the most common type of OS recovery,
largely due to the simple fact that the MS
operating system is the most proliferate operating system today. Recovering data from a MS operating system is the
easier than Mac or
Linux recovery, due to the way
Windows works. Complications usually arise when XP, ME or NT is involved,
especially when dealing with NTFS partition
recovery and protected files.
There exist many Windows software
recovery solutions. Understanding if software is the answer is the
first step.
Start with the problem you are experiencing. Is your hard drive working?
If it is, but you can't boot into windows with
the current state of your boot files, then the quickest solution would be
to restore the system with Norton or Ghost disk cloning programs. Don't
know what disk cloning software is? Then forget about the operating system
and all those programs you have installed and start thinking about the
actual files that are on your system, such as PST files for your email
messages, .docs or the like from your word processing program and any
other files you consider critical to salvage.
With this list of your most
important files, physically remove the hard
drive from the failed machine and install it as a slave drive in a working
machine. Find full instructions for completing this process on the
computer system recovery page. Boot this machine up after installing the troubled drive and look
for the files on your
critical list. Start to copy them over to
the working drive. Once this is complete, you
can either burn these files, or, the quickest
way is to format the drive and reinstall the operating system followed by
the installation of all the programs you use. With this complete,
remove the drive once again and install it on the other machine
and copy your files back to the reformatted drive in the location
you choose. Then reinstall the drive back in the original machine, reboot
and place your salvaged data back in the appropriate locations, such as
default pst/Outlook Express file locations, and you're back in business! While
this whole process will most likely take you a full day, at least you have
saved the data, which if lost would most certainly have taken you a lot
more than that to recover!
Again, the above scenario only applies if you
have a hard drive that is still working but has corrupt boot files. If
your hard drive has stopped spinning or is making strange sounds, shut your PC off and consider how valuable
the data is too you, as you will definitely
require professional data recovery
services.
Lastly, we want to remind everyone about the
importance of backing up your data. This will save you both time and money some day, and
while it takes effort, the rewards in an
emergency data recovery
situation will become evident immediately. You can use Norton clone,
Ghost, manual file copying or a variety of other options depending on
what's right for your particular situation.
